It was the beginning of March--around March 4th or 5th I think, the Texas weather had turned pleasant and we finally decided to take the plunge and build a garden. Of course everyone knows that the texas clay-like soil, at least in the DFW area, is not the most conducive to gardening, so we went ahead and built some garden boxes. We had some old redwood in our garage, so we used that for the first box. We went to the Home Depot and got some cedar (we heard it helps to repel insects) and built one more, and now we have a garden. Now that we've started, we might be just a little obsessed. We decided that we should document our efforts so that we can learn from our mistakes for next season...I'm sure that we are making plenty.
We had heard that the recommended mixture for an above ground garden is 1/3 compost, 1/3 pete moss, and 1/3 course vermiculite. Compost and pete moss were easy to find. Vermiculite, not so much. We did find some up at Lantana, but only in HUGE quantities and it was not cheap, so we decided to just try some regular garden soil containing pete moss and mix in some Miracle Grow for gardens. Hopefully this will not be our first mistake. If it is we'll spring for the good stuff and try again next year.
